Winning the Picky Eater Battle with Love
Smart strategies to help your fussy toddler enjoy a variety of nutritious foods
If your toddler refuses sabzi or pushes away dal, you're not alone! Picky eating peaks between 2-4 years and is completely normal developmental behavior.
The golden rule? Never force-feed. This creates negative food associations. Instead, follow the 'division of responsibility' – you decide what to serve and when, your child decides how much to eat. Offer small portions and let them ask for more.
Make mealtimes pressure-free and pleasant. Sit together as a family without distractions. Let your child see you enjoying the same foods. Try the 'one bite rule' – encourage tasting without pressure to finish. Repeated exposure (10-15 times) helps acceptance.
Get creative with presentation. Make colorful plates with fun shapes. Involve your child in age-appropriate cooking – washing vegetables, stirring batter. They're more likely to eat what they help prepare. Offer familiar favorites alongside new foods.
Stick to meal and snack schedules. Avoid grazing or excessive milk/juice between meals which kills appetite. Don't use desserts as bribes – this makes them more desirable than nutritious foods. Remember, healthy children won't starve themselves. Trust their hunger cues, maintain patience, and consult your pediatrician if growth is affected.
