Is Your Toddler's Speech on Track?
Simple milestones and fun ways to boost your little one's language skills
Many Indian parents worry when their toddler isn't talking as much as their cousin's child. Remember, every child develops at their own pace, but knowing key milestones helps you support them better.
By 12 months, most babies say 1-2 words like "mumma" or "dada." By 18 months, expect 10-20 words. Two-year-olds typically combine two words ("want pani"), and by age 3, they speak in short sentences. Don't worry if your child mixes Hindi, English, and your regional language—this is perfectly normal and healthy for bilingual development!
To boost speech naturally: Talk constantly during daily routines ("Chalo, haath dhote hain"), read picture books together, sing rhymes like "Machli Jal Ki Rani," and respond enthusiastically to their attempts. Avoid too much screen time, as face-to-face interaction is irreplaceable. During meals, name foods—"yeh daal hai, yeh roti hai."
Concern signs: No words by 18 months, no two-word phrases by 2.5 years, or if they're losing skills they once had. If you notice these, consult your pediatrician. Early intervention makes a huge difference. Most importantly, celebrate small wins and create a language-rich, pressure-free environment where your little one feels excited to communicate!
