Water Safety Tips for Little Ones This Winter
Essential water safety rules as families visit pools, beaches, and bathtubs
With pleasant November weather, many families are planning trips to beaches, resorts with pools, or simply enjoying longer bath times at home. Water safety for toddlers is crucial year-round, but especially now when water activities increase.
Never leave your child unattended near water—not even for a second. Toddlers can drown in just 2 inches of water, including buckets, bathtubs, and even large utensils. In India, where many homes store water in drums and buckets, always keep these covered and out of reach. During bath time, keep all supplies within arm's reach so you never need to step away.
If you're visiting a pool or beach, use properly fitted life jackets (not inflatable arm bands which can slip off). Teach your child to always ask permission before going near water. Even if your toddler knows how to swim, constant adult supervision is non-negotiable. In public pools, stay within arm's length—this is called 'touch supervision.'
Consider enrolling your child in age-appropriate swimming lessons after 12 months. While these don't make children 'drown-proof,' they build water confidence and basic skills. Most importantly, learn CPR yourself—it's a life skill every parent should have. Enjoy the water safely with your little one!
