Why Your Child Isn't Sleeping Well This Monsoon

Humidity, thunder, and weather changes can disrupt your little one's sleep

Many parents notice their little ones becoming restless sleepers during monsoon. You're not imagining it! The combination of high humidity, sudden temperature drops, loud thunder, and changing barometric pressure genuinely affects young children's sleep patterns.

Humidity makes babies uncomfortable and sweaty, while thunder and lightning can startle them awake multiple times. Some children also develop stuffy noses from increased moisture in the air, making breathing difficult during sleep.

Here's what helps: Keep the room well-ventilated but not directly exposed to rain. Use a fan on low speed to circulate air without making it too cold. Dress your child in breathable cotton fabrics—avoid synthetic materials that trap heat. A thin cotton sheet is better than heavy blankets during humid nights.

For thunder anxiety, try white noise from a fan or a gentle lullaby to mask sudden sounds. Keep a dim nightlight if your child seems scared. If nasal congestion is an issue, elevate the head slightly with a folded towel under the mattress (never use pillows for babies under 1 year).

Maintain consistent bedtime routines even when weather disrupts sleep—this gives children a sense of security. A warm bath, gentle massage with coconut or almond oil, and calm cuddle time signal that sleep is coming, regardless of the storm outside.
