When Your Toddler Says 'No' to Everything
Practical tips to handle picky eating without stress or battles at mealtime
If your toddler suddenly refuses foods they once loved, you're not alone. Picky eating peaks between 2-4 years and is completely normal developmental behavior.
The golden rule? Never force-feed. It creates negative associations with food and worsens the problem. Instead, offer small portions of 2-3 foods at each meal - include at least one food you know they like. Let them see you enjoying the same foods. Toddlers learn by watching!
Make food fun and familiar. If they love dosa, try vegetable dosa. If they eat dal-chawal, gradually add a small sabzi on the side. Keep introducing rejected foods without pressure - it can take 10-15 exposures before acceptance. Involve them in simple prep like washing vegetables or stirring batter.
Avoid distractions like TV or phones during meals. Set regular meal times and limit grazing between meals so they come to the table hungry. Most importantly, trust their appetite. Growth slows after age 1, so they naturally need less food than you might expect.
Remember, your job is to offer nutritious food at regular times. Their job is to decide whether and how much to eat. This division of responsibility reduces mealtime battles and helps develop healthy eating habits for life.
