Vitamin D & Your Child This Monsoon

Less sunshine during monsoons? Here's how to protect your child from Vitamin D deficiency

As the monsoon clouds roll in, our little ones get much less exposure to sunshine. This can lead to Vitamin D deficiency, which is crucial for bone development, immunity, and overall growth in children under 5.

During these months, even 10-15 minutes of morning sunlight becomes rare. Vitamin D deficiency can cause delayed milestones, weak bones, frequent infections, and in severe cases, rickets. Indian children are already at higher risk due to our skin tone requiring more sun exposure for Vitamin D synthesis.

What can you do? First, give your child Vitamin D supplements as recommended by your pediatrician (usually 400 IU daily for infants, 600 IU for toddlers). Include Vitamin D-rich foods like fortified milk, egg yolks, paneer, and fatty fish. On days when there's morning sunshine between rain spells, take your child near an open window or balcony for brief exposure.

Don't wait for symptoms to appear. A simple blood test can check Vitamin D levels if your child seems frequently unwell, irritable, or showing delayed motor skills. Prevention is always better than treatment, especially during monsoon when outdoor time is naturally limited.
