Vitamin D in Monsoon: Your Baby Needs Sunshine

Cloudy monsoon days mean less Vitamin D. Here's how to protect your child.

During monsoon, the sun hides behind clouds for weeks, and our little ones miss out on crucial Vitamin D. This 'sunshine vitamin' is essential for strong bones, immunity, and healthy growth in children under 5.

Many Indian babies already have low Vitamin D levels, and monsoon makes it worse. Watch for signs like irritability, delayed sitting or walking, soft skull bones in infants, or frequent infections. These could indicate deficiency.

What you can do: On days with brief sunshine, let your baby enjoy 10-15 minutes of morning sunlight (before 10 AM) with arms and legs exposed. Fortified milk, egg yolks, and ghee provide some Vitamin D. However, food alone isn't enough for growing children.

Most pediatricians recommend Vitamin D drops (400 IU daily for babies, 600 IU for toddlers). Don't skip the supplements your doctor prescribed, especially during monsoon. A simple blood test can check your child's levels if you're concerned.

Remember, strong bones built in early childhood last a lifetime. A few drops daily now can prevent rickets and bone problems later. Speak to your pediatrician about the right supplement and dosage for your child this monsoon season.
