Sunshine Vitamin in Cloudy Days
Why your child needs Vitamin D during monsoon and how to ensure they get enough
During monsoon, those beautiful cloudy days mean significantly less sunlight exposure for your little one. Vitamin D, the 'sunshine vitamin', is crucial for your child's bone development, immunity, and overall growth—especially in the first five years.
Many Indian children are already at risk of Vitamin D deficiency, and monsoon weeks worsen this. Without adequate Vitamin D, children may face weakened bones, delayed milestones, frequent infections, and irritability. Babies under 12 months need 400 IU daily, while toddlers need 600 IU.
What can you do? First, catch those brief sunny windows—even 10-15 minutes of indirect morning sunlight (before 10 AM) on arms and legs helps. Include Vitamin D-rich foods: egg yolks, fortified milk, paneer, ghee, and fish like mackerel or salmon. For breastfed babies, continue Vitamin D drops as prescribed by your pediatrician.
Don't hesitate to get your child's Vitamin D levels tested, especially if they seem lethargic or unwell frequently. A simple blood test can guide whether supplementation is needed. Remember, Vitamin D deficiency is silent but preventable—a little awareness during monsoon goes a long way in keeping your child healthy and strong!
