Sunshine Vitamin During Monsoon Days

How to prevent Vitamin D deficiency when sunlight is scarce this monsoon

During monsoon months, cloudy skies and indoor routines mean our little ones miss out on precious sunlight—the natural source of Vitamin D. This vitamin is crucial for strong bones, healthy immunity, and proper growth in children under 5.

Many Indian toddlers already have borderline Vitamin D levels, and monsoon worsens this. Watch for signs like delayed walking, frequent falls, irritability, or slower tooth eruption. If your child rarely plays outdoors or has darker skin (which needs more sun exposure for Vitamin D synthesis), they're at higher risk.

Make the most of brief sunny breaks—even 15-20 minutes of morning sunlight (before 10 AM) on arms and legs helps. Include Vitamin D-rich foods: egg yolks, fortified milk, paneer, mushrooms exposed to sunlight, and fatty fish like salmon or sardines. For babies under 6 months on exclusive breastfeeding, continue the Vitamin D drops (400 IU daily) prescribed by your pediatrician.

Don't hesitate to ask your doctor about Vitamin D supplementation, especially if your child has limited sun exposure. A simple blood test can check levels. Remember, strong bones built in early childhood last a lifetime—monsoon shouldn't come in the way of your child's healthy development!
