Sunshine Vitamin During Cloudy Monsoon Days
How to prevent Vitamin D deficiency when sunlight is scarce this monsoon
Dear parents, during monsoon months, cloudy skies mean your little one gets very limited sunlight exposure - and that affects their Vitamin D levels. This 'sunshine vitamin' is crucial for strong bones, immunity, and healthy growth in children under 5.
Many Indian toddlers already have low Vitamin D levels, and monsoon makes it worse. Babies who are exclusively breastfed are at higher risk since breast milk contains minimal Vitamin D. Watch for signs like delayed milestones, frequent infections, irritability, or bone pain.
What you can do: Give your child 10-15 minutes of morning sunlight (before 10 AM) even on a covered balcony when possible. Include Vitamin D-rich foods like egg yolks, fortified milk, paneer, and mushrooms (kept in sunlight for 30 minutes before cooking). For babies under 6 months, discuss Vitamin D drops (400 IU daily) with your pediatrician - this is especially important during monsoon.
Don't skip your child's routine health checkups. Your doctor can assess if supplementation is needed. Remember, adequate Vitamin D today means stronger bones and better immunity for life. A simple daily drop can make a big difference during these grey monsoon months!
