Summer Hydration Tips for Your Little One
Keep your baby cool and hydrated during hot Indian summer days
As April temperatures soar across India, keeping our little ones hydrated becomes crucial. Babies and toddlers are more susceptible to heat-related issues because their bodies regulate temperature differently than adults.
For babies under 6 months, breast milk provides complete hydration - no extra water needed! If formula-fed, you may offer small sips of cooled boiled water between feeds. For toddlers over 6 months, fresh coconut water (nariyal pani) is excellent - it's naturally cooling and rich in electrolytes.
Watch for dehydration signs: fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, lethargy, or fussiness. Dress your child in light, breathable cotton clothes and avoid peak sun hours (11 AM to 4 PM) for outdoor play.
Offer water-rich foods like cucumber, watermelon, and buttermilk (chaas). Keep a sipper bottle handy and encourage frequent small sips rather than large amounts at once. Use fans, keep curtains drawn during day, and ensure your child's room stays cool.
Remember, prevention is better than cure. A well-hydrated child is a happy, healthy child ready to enjoy summer safely!
