Summer Hydration Tips for Little Ones
Keep your baby cool and hydrated during India's hot summer months
As summer temperatures soar across India, keeping our little ones hydrated becomes our top priority. Babies and toddlers are more prone to dehydration as their bodies lose water faster than adults.
For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula provides all the hydration they need - no additional water required! For older babies, offer small sips of boiled and cooled water throughout the day. Include water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and tender coconut water for toddlers above 1 year.
Watch for dehydration signs: fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, lethargy, or sunken fontanelle in babies. During peak heat hours (10 AM - 4 PM), keep children indoors in well-ventilated spaces. Use cotton clothing and avoid synthetic fabrics.
Traditional Indian cooling foods like buttermilk (chaas), diluted yogurt, and fresh fruit juices work wonderfully for toddlers. Always ensure water and food are from clean sources. If your child shows signs of heat exhaustion - excessive crying, vomiting, or high fever - consult your pediatrician immediately.
Remember, prevention is better than cure. A well-hydrated child is a happy, healthy child!
