Summer Heat & Your Baby: 5 Essential Care Tips
Keep your little one cool, comfortable and healthy this summer season
As April brings rising temperatures across India, protecting our little ones from summer heat becomes crucial. Babies and toddlers are more vulnerable to heat-related issues as their bodies regulate temperature differently than adults.
First, dress your child in loose, light-colored cotton clothes. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat. For babies under 6 months, stick to frequent breastfeeding - it provides both nutrition and hydration. For older children, offer water regularly throughout the day.
Create a cool environment at home using fans, keeping curtains drawn during peak sun hours (11 AM - 4 PM), and placing damp towels near windows. Never leave your child in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
Watch for signs of overheating: excessive fussiness, dry mouth, reduced wet diapers, or unusual sleepiness. Apply a gentle, baby-safe sunscreen if going outdoors, and plan outings for early morning or evening hours.
Remember, traditional remedies like coconut water (for children above 6 months) and cucumber can help cool the body naturally. Trust your instincts - if your child seems uncomfortable, take immediate steps to cool them down.
