Shield Your Little One from Monsoon Mosquitoes
Safe and effective ways to protect babies and toddlers from mosquito bites
Monsoon brings relief from heat, but also invites unwelcome guests—mosquitoes! For our little ones under 5, mosquito bites aren't just itchy; they can spread dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.
**For Babies Under 2 Months:** Avoid chemical repellents entirely. Use mosquito nets over cribs and prams. Dress baby in full-sleeved cotton clothes during evening hours. Keep windows screened and use natural protection like neem oil diluted in coconut oil on exposed areas (patch test first).
**For Toddlers (2 months to 5 years):** Look for repellents with natural ingredients like citronella or eucalyptus. Avoid DEET products above 10% concentration. Apply repellent on your hands first, then on child's exposed skin—never on hands, eyes, or mouth areas. Reapply after 2-3 hours if outdoors.
**Home Protection:** Empty all water containers weekly—flowerpots, coolers, and buckets are breeding grounds. Use mosquito nets while sleeping, even with a fan on. Install screens on windows. Consider electric vaporizers with child-safe formulations, but keep them away from the crib.
**What to Avoid:** Don't use camphor or strong chemical coils in baby's room. Never apply repellent under clothing or on broken skin. If your child shows fever after a mosquito bite during monsoon, consult your pediatrician immediately—early detection matters!
