Shield Your Little One from Monsoon Mosquitoes

Safe and effective ways to protect babies and toddlers from mosquito bites

The monsoon brings relief from heat, but also invites unwanted guests—mosquitoes! For young children, mosquito bites aren't just itchy; they can transmit dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Here's how to protect your little ones safely.

**For Babies Under 2 Months:** Avoid chemical repellents completely. Use mosquito nets over cribs and prams. Dress baby in full-sleeved cotton clothes during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Keep windows screened or closed during these hours.

**For Children Above 2 Months:** Pediatrician-approved natural repellents with citronella or eucalyptus can be applied on clothes, not directly on skin. For children above 2 years, use repellents with 10-30% DEET sparingly on exposed skin, avoiding hands, eyes, and mouth. Always test on a small patch first.

**Home Protection:** Empty all water containers, flower pots, and coolers weekly. Use mosquito nets while sleeping—this is the safest option for all ages. Avoid coils and liquid vaporizers in closed rooms where babies sleep, as fumes can irritate tiny lungs.

**What to Avoid:** Never use repellents on broken skin, don't apply near food, and skip combination sunscreen-repellent products for young children. If your child develops fever after a mosquito bite during monsoon, consult your pediatrician immediately—early detection of mosquito-borne diseases is crucial.
