Safe Water Practices During Monsoon
Protect your little one from waterborne infections with smart water habits
Monsoon brings relief from heat but also increases the risk of water contamination. For babies and toddlers with developing immunity, contaminated water can cause diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis A.
**Safe Drinking Water:** Always boil water for at least 10-15 minutes and cool it before giving to children. If using a water purifier, service it before monsoon starts. For formula milk, use only boiled and cooled water. Store boiled water in clean, covered steel or glass containers—not plastic bottles reused multiple times.
**Bath and Play Water:** Avoid letting children play in stagnant rainwater puddles, which can harbor bacteria and mosquito larvae. For bath time, ensure the water source is clean. After playing outside in rain, give your child a proper bath with clean water to wash away any contaminants.
**Food Preparation:** Use boiled/purified water to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Avoid giving raw salads to very young children during monsoon. When preparing dal, rice, or khichdi, use safe water. Ice cubes should only be made from boiled water.
**Watch for Warning Signs:** If your child has loose motions more than 3 times, vomiting, or refuses to drink water, consult your pediatrician immediately. Dehydration happens quickly in little ones. Keep ORS packets handy at home as a precaution.
