Safe Water Habits for Your Little One This Monsoon
Protect your child from waterborne infections with smart water safety tips
Monsoon brings increased risk of waterborne diseases like diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera—especially dangerous for young children whose immune systems are still developing. Your child's health depends on the water they drink, bathe in, and play around.
**Safe Drinking Water Practices:** Always boil water for at least 10-15 minutes and cool it before giving to children under 5. If using a water purifier, service it regularly—monsoon humidity can affect filters. Store boiled water in clean, covered steel or glass containers, not plastic bottles reused multiple times. For formula-fed babies, use only freshly boiled and cooled water.
**Bathing and Hygiene:** Warm water baths are best during monsoon. Dry your child completely, especially between toes and skin folds, to prevent fungal infections. If your child plays in rain puddles (hard to resist!), give them a proper wash afterward with soap. Teach handwashing before eating—make it fun with songs.
**Watch Out For:** Avoid giving children water from public taps, tankers, or unknown sources when outside. Carry your own boiled water in a clean bottle. If your child shows signs of stomach upset, loose motions, or vomiting, offer ORS and consult your pediatrician immediately. Prevention through clean water is your best protection this season.
