Safe Splashing: Water Play Tips This Summer
Keep your little one safe while they enjoy cooling water activities this season
Water play is a wonderful way to beat the summer heat and keep your little one entertained! Whether it's a small inflatable pool at home, a bucket of water, or bath time fun, water activities offer cooling relief and sensory development. However, safety must always come first.
Never leave your child unattended near water, even for a moment. Drowning can happen in just 2 inches of water and within seconds. Always stay within arm's reach of babies and toddlers during water play. Empty buckets, tubs, and pools immediately after use, as even stored water attracts curious toddlers.
Use clean, fresh water for play and change it daily to prevent infections. Avoid adding ice-cold water directly—use room temperature or slightly cool water to prevent sudden temperature shock. For outdoor play, apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going out and reapply after water activities. A sun hat and shaded area are essential between 11 AM and 4 PM.
Watch for signs of overexposure like shivering, blue lips, or excessive fatigue. Limit water play to 15-20 minutes for babies and 30 minutes for toddlers. After play, dry your child thoroughly, especially skin folds and ears, to prevent fungal infections common in our humid climate. Make water play a joyful summer ritual, but always with your watchful eyes and caring supervision!
