Rainy Days, Talking Ways!

Use monsoon time indoors to boost your little one's speech and language skills

The monsoon season keeps us indoors more often, making it the perfect opportunity to focus on your child's speech development! These cozy indoor days offer uninterrupted time for meaningful conversations and language-building activities.

Start with rain-themed storytelling. Describe what you see and hear: "Dekho, kitni zor se baarish ho rahi hai!" Use simple, repetitive phrases. Sing rhymes like "Rimjhim Gire Sawan" or "Rain, rain, go away" with hand gestures. When your toddler babbles or attempts words, respond enthusiastically and expand on what they say. If they say "pani," you say "Haan, bahut pani! Baarish ka pani!"

Create a sound treasure hunt at home. Listen to rain sounds, the cooker's whistle, doorbell—and imitate them together. Name everyday objects in both your mother tongue and English. "Yeh chammach hai, this is a spoon." Bilingualism is a gift, not a confusion!

Limit screen time, even on rainy days. Real conversations build neural pathways that screens cannot. Read picture books together, pause to let your child point and name things. Cook together and narrate: "Ab hum chawal dho rahe hain."

If your child isn't saying 10-15 words by 18 months or combining words by age 2, consult your pediatrician. Early intervention works wonders. Use these monsoon weeks wisely—every conversation is a building block for your child's bright, articulate future!
