Rainy Day Play: Keep Your Toddler Active Indoors

Fun, developmental indoor activities to beat monsoon boredom and boost growth

With continuous rains keeping little ones indoors, many parents worry about their child's physical activity and development. But your living room can become a wonderful play space with some creativity!

For babies (0-12 months), create a safe floor play area with cushions. Practice tummy time, roll colorful balls, or play peek-a-boo with dupattas. For toddlers (1-3 years), set up an indoor obstacle course using pillows, chairs, and cardboard boxes. Dancing to Hindi rhymes is excellent for gross motor skills.

Sensory play is perfect for monsoon days. Make homemade playdough with atta, salt, and food coloring. Fill a large thali with dry rajma, moong, and rice for sensory bins—let them scoop and pour (always supervise!). Water play in a small tub with cups and spoons keeps them engaged for hours.

Art activities boost fine motor skills. Finger painting, tearing paper to make collages, or stamping with potato cuts are mess-friendly options. Keep a dedicated 'art corner' with washable supplies.

Remember, screen time should be limited. The WHO recommends no screens before age 2, and less than one hour daily for 2-5 year olds. Active play is crucial for physical health, brain development, and emotional regulation—especially when outdoor time is limited.
