Rainy Day Fun: Keeping Toddlers Happy Indoors
Creative indoor activities to keep your little ones engaged during monsoon
The monsoon brings beautiful rains but also keeps our little ones stuck indoors for days. Without outdoor play, toddlers can become restless and cranky. Here's how to turn these rainy days into fun learning experiences.
Create a sensory play corner with items from your kitchen. Fill a large thali with rice or moong dal and hide small toys for your child to find. This improves fine motor skills and keeps them engaged for hours. Water play in a plastic tub with floating toys, cups, and spoons is another hit—just spread old newspapers underneath.
Set up a simple art station with washable colors, old newspapers, and playdough made from atta, salt, and food coloring. Let them paint freely, make shapes, or tear paper—messy play is great for development! Dance sessions to rhymes, building blocks with old cardboard boxes, and puppet shows with socks are wonderful zero-cost activities.
Do limit screen time even when indoors. The AAP recommends no screens before 18 months and maximum one hour of quality content for 2-5 year olds. Rainy days are perfect for building routines—story time, pretend cooking in a toy kitchen, or simply jumping on cushions placed on the floor.
Remember, bored moments teach children creativity. You don't need to entertain them constantly. A little boredom encourages imagination!
