Protecting Your Toddler's Teeth This Diwali
Simple dental care tips to keep your little one's smile healthy during festive season
With Diwali around the corner, your little one will be surrounded by mithai, chocolates, and sweet treats. While we all want our children to enjoy the festivities, this is the perfect time to build strong dental habits.
Start early—even before the first tooth appears, gently wipe your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth after feeds. Once teeth emerge, use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush with a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. For toddlers over 3 years, increase it to a pea-sized amount. Brush twice daily—morning and especially before bed.
During festivals, limit sticky sweets like peda, barfi, and toffees that cling to teeth. Offer sweets during meals rather than as frequent snacks, and follow up with water. Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, as this causes severe tooth decay.
Make brushing fun! Sing songs, let them pick their toothbrush, or brush together as a family. Most importantly, schedule your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. Prevention is always better than cure, and healthy baby teeth pave the way for strong permanent teeth. This Diwali, give your child the gift of a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime!
