Protecting Your Little One from Mosquitoes
Safe and effective ways to shield babies and toddlers from monsoon mosquitoes
Monsoon brings relief from heat, but also a surge in mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable due to their developing immunity.
For infants under 2 months, physical barriers work best. Use mosquito nets with fine mesh over cribs and prams. Dress your baby in light, long-sleeved cotton clothes during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Keep windows closed or install mesh screens.
For babies above 2 months, pediatrician-approved mosquito repellents containing natural ingredients like citronella or eucalyptus oil can be used sparingly on exposed skin. Avoid products with DEET concentration above 30% for children. Never apply repellent on hands, near eyes, or on broken skin.
Inside the home, eliminate stagnant water in coolers, flower pots, and containers where mosquitoes breed. Electric mosquito rackets are safer than coils or vaporizers which can irritate tiny lungs. If using liquid vaporizers, ensure good ventilation and place them away from your child's sleeping area.
Watch for warning signs like high fever, rash, or unusual lethargy. Early detection of mosquito-borne illnesses ensures better outcomes. Your vigilance is your child's best protection this monsoon.
