Protecting Tiny Ears This Monsoon
Why ear infections spike during monsoon and how to keep your child safe
The monsoon season brings a noticeable increase in ear infections among young children. The combination of high humidity, frequent temperature changes, and increased moisture creates the perfect environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive in the ear canal.
Young children are particularly vulnerable because their Eustachian tubes (connecting the middle ear to the throat) are shorter and more horizontal, making it easier for infections to develop. Watch for signs like ear tugging, irritability, fever, difficulty sleeping, or fluid drainage from the ear.
To protect your little one, always dry their ears gently after bath time using a soft towel—never insert cotton buds inside the ear canal. During rainy outings, use a hood or cap to keep ears dry. If your child has a cold, keep their head slightly elevated during sleep to help drainage. Avoid exposing them to sudden temperature changes, like moving from AC rooms directly into humid air.
Breastfeeding (for infants) helps build immunity against ear infections. For toddlers, ensure they're well-hydrated and getting adequate sleep. If you notice any signs of ear discomfort lasting more than a day, or if there's fever or drainage, consult your pediatrician promptly. Most ear infections resolve with proper treatment, but early intervention prevents complications.
