Protecting Little Lungs This Monsoon Season
Simple steps to prevent coughs, colds and chest infections during rainy months
The monsoon brings joy and relief from heat, but also increases respiratory infections in young children. The combination of humidity, temperature changes, and damp conditions creates the perfect environment for viruses and bacteria to thrive.
Your child's developing immune system needs extra support during these months. Watch for early signs like persistent cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, or fever. Infants under 6 months are especially vulnerable and need immediate medical attention if breathing becomes labored.
Practical prevention tips: Keep your home well-ventilated even during rains—open windows for cross-ventilation when it's not pouring. Avoid sudden temperature changes; don't move children directly from AC rooms to humid outdoor air. Dress them in breathable cotton layers that can be adjusted. Steam inhalation (with you holding the baby safely away from hot water) helps clear congestion naturally.
Nutrition matters tremendously. Include immunity-boosting foods like dal, seasonal vegetables, and fruits rich in Vitamin C like amla and guava. Breastfeeding mothers should maintain their own nutrition. Keep children hydrated with frequent feeds, water, or homemade soups.
Avoid crowded, poorly ventilated spaces like malls during peak monsoon. Teach older toddlers to cover their mouth when coughing. Most importantly, trust your instincts—if your child seems unusually unwell, consult your pediatrician promptly rather than waiting.
