Protecting Little Lungs This Monsoon
Keep your child's breathing healthy during the humid monsoon months
The monsoon's high humidity and temperature fluctuations make young children more vulnerable to respiratory infections like colds, coughs, and bronchiolitis. Their developing immune systems need extra support during these challenging months.
Start by ensuring good ventilation at home. Open windows during dry spells to let fresh air circulate, but keep them closed during heavy rains. Dampness encourages mold growth, which can trigger breathing difficulties. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe condensation from walls and windows daily.
Keep your child away from sudden temperature changes. When coming indoors from the rain, gently pat them dry and change into warm, dry clothes immediately. Avoid direct exposure to air conditioners right after being in the rain. Steam inhalation (with you holding your baby safely near warm water vapors, never too close) can help clear congested nasal passages naturally.
Boost immunity through nutrition. Include warm foods like khichdi, dal soup, and seasonal vegetables. Turmeric milk (haldi doodh) at bedtime works wonders for older toddlers. Keep your child well-hydrated with warm water throughout the day.
Watch for warning signs: rapid breathing, chest pulling inward while breathing, persistent fever, or refusal to feed. These need immediate medical attention. Remember, most monsoon coughs and colds resolve with home care, rest, and lots of cuddles from you!
