Protecting Little Lungs This Monsoon
Simple steps to prevent colds, coughs and chest infections during rainy season
Monsoon brings relief from heat, but also a spike in respiratory infections among young children. The humidity and temperature fluctuations create perfect conditions for viruses to thrive, making toddlers especially vulnerable to colds, coughs, and bronchiolitis.
Start with the basics: keep your child dry. Wet clothes and rain-soaked feet lower body temperature, making it easier for infections to take hold. Always carry an extra set of clothes and keep feet covered with closed shoes or gumboots during outdoor play.
Boost immunity naturally with warm, home-cooked meals. Include ginger, turmeric, garlic and tulsi in daily cooking. A warm kadha made with these ingredients (age-appropriate and without honey for babies under 1 year) can work wonders. Ensure your child drinks plenty of warm fluids throughout the day.
Ventilation is key! Many parents seal windows during rain, but stale indoor air harbors germs. Open windows for cross-ventilation when it's not raining heavily. Avoid crowded indoor spaces like malls and birthday party halls where infections spread quickly.
Watch for warning signs: rapid breathing, chest indrawing, refusing feeds, or high fever lasting more than 3 days. These need immediate medical attention. Remember, most monsoon colds are viral and don't need antibiotics—patience, rest, and comfort care usually do the trick.
