Protecting Little Lungs This Monsoon
Prevent colds, coughs & chest infections during humid monsoon days
The monsoon brings relief from heat, but also increases respiratory infections in young children. The combination of humidity, temperature fluctuations, and poor ventilation creates the perfect environment for viruses and bacteria to thrive.
**Why are little ones more vulnerable?** Children under 5 have developing immune systems and narrower airways, making them prone to frequent colds, coughs, and even bronchiolitis. Damp clothes, wet hair after rain, and crowded indoor spaces during rainy days increase exposure to infections.
**Prevention tips:** Keep your home well-ventilated even during rains—open windows for short periods when it's not pouring. Change wet clothes immediately and ensure your child's hair is dried properly. Avoid taking babies to crowded, poorly ventilated spaces like malls during peak monsoon. Steam inhalation (with you holding the child safely away from hot water) can help clear congestion.
**Nutrition matters:** Include warm, immunity-boosting foods like daliya with ghee, vegetable khichdi, and turmeric milk. Offer small amounts of warm water throughout the day. Ginger-tulsi kadha (for children above 1 year) can provide comfort.
**When to see a doctor:** If your child has difficulty breathing, persistent high fever beyond 3 days, refuses to feed, or shows chest retractions, seek medical help immediately. Don't delay—respiratory infections can escalate quickly in tiny tots.
