Protecting Little Lungs This Autumn
Seasonal air quality dips—here's how to keep your child's breathing healthy
As October progresses, many Indian cities experience a dip in air quality due to stubble burning, Diwali preparations, and cooler air trapping pollutants. Young children, whose lungs are still developing, are especially vulnerable to respiratory issues during this season.
Start by monitoring the Air Quality Index (AQI) daily through weather apps. When AQI crosses 150, limit outdoor activities, especially early mornings and evenings when pollution peaks. Keep windows closed during high-pollution hours and use indoor air purifiers if possible. A simple hack: place wet cotton curtains near windows to trap dust particles.
Strength from within matters too! Include immunity-boosting foods like haldi doodh, seasonal fruits like pomegranate and guava, and warm soups with garlic and ginger. Steam inhalation (under supervision, never hot steam directly) with ajwain or eucalyptus can help clear nasal passages if your child shows congestion.
Avoid: Taking babies to heavily congested areas, burning incense or mosquito coils indoors, and dismissing persistent cough as "just seasonal." If your child has wheezing, rapid breathing, or cough lasting beyond a week, consult your pediatrician promptly. Prevention is always easier than cure, especially with tiny lungs that need our extra care this season.
