Protecting Little Ears This Monsoon Season
Keep your child's ears safe from monsoon infections with these simple tips
Monsoon brings relief from heat, but also increases the risk of ear infections in young children. The high humidity and dampness create perfect conditions for bacteria and fungi to thrive, especially in little ears.
Why are children more vulnerable? Their ear canals are shorter and more horizontal than adults, making it easier for water and germs to get trapped inside. Swimming pools, rain play, and even humid air can lead to outer ear infections (otitis externa) or middle ear problems.
Practical prevention tips: After bath time, gently dry your child's ears with a soft towel – tilt their head to each side to let water drain naturally. Never use cotton buds inside the ear canal; they can push wax deeper and damage delicate skin. If your child enjoys rain play, dry their ears immediately afterward. Keep hair dry around the ears, as wet hair keeps the area damp.
Watch for warning signs like ear tugging, crying when lying down, fever, or fluid drainage. Breastfeeding babies should be fed in an upright position to prevent milk from entering the ear canal. If your child is prone to infections, consult your pediatrician about whether ear plugs are suitable during baths.
Remember, most ear infections are preventable with simple hygiene. But if your child shows discomfort or fever, don't wait – seek medical advice promptly.
