Protecting Little Ears This Monsoon Season

Why ear infections spike during monsoon and how to keep your child safe

Monsoon brings relief from heat but also a spike in ear infections among young children. The high humidity, frequent colds, and water exposure during rains make little ears vulnerable. Ear infections can cause severe pain, fever, and irritability in babies and toddlers.

Why does this happen? When children catch colds (common in monsoon), the infection can travel through the Eustachian tube to the middle ear. Water entering ears during bath time or rain play also creates a moist environment where bacteria thrive. Young children are especially prone because their Eustachian tubes are shorter and more horizontal.

Watch for these signs: your child tugging at their ears, crying more than usual, trouble sleeping, fluid drainage from the ear, or loss of balance. Fever accompanying these symptoms needs immediate medical attention.

Prevention tips: Gently dry ears after baths with a soft towel—never insert cotton buds deep inside. During head baths, tilt your child's head to help water drain out naturally. Keep your child away from secondhand smoke. Breastfeeding boosts immunity in infants. If your child gets frequent colds, consult your pediatrician about steam inhalation (for older toddlers) or saline drops.

Never ignore ear pain or self-medicate with ear drops. What seems like a simple infection can affect hearing if untreated. Your pediatrician can examine the ear properly and prescribe appropriate treatment if needed.
