Protecting Little Ears This Monsoon Season

Why ear infections spike during monsoons and how to keep your child safe

The monsoon brings beautiful rains but also a spike in ear infections among young children. The high humidity and temperature fluctuations create the perfect environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive in tiny ear canals.

Young children are especially vulnerable because their Eustachian tubes (connecting the middle ear to the throat) are shorter and more horizontal, making it easier for infections to develop. Watch for signs like ear tugging, irritability, fever, trouble sleeping, or fluid drainage from the ear.

To protect your little one: Always dry ears gently after bath time using a soft cotton cloth—never insert cotton buds inside the ear canal. If your child gets wet in the rain, dry their hair and ears promptly. Avoid swimming in pools or natural water bodies during peak monsoon as contaminated water can easily enter ears. Keep your child's immunity strong with nutritious foods like dal, seasonal vegetables, and fruits rich in Vitamin C.

If you notice your child frequently touching their ear, crying more than usual, or showing any signs of hearing difficulty, consult your pediatrician immediately. Early treatment prevents complications. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, especially with our precious little ones!
