Protecting Little Ears This Monsoon Season
Why ear infections spike during monsoon and how to keep your child safe
The humid monsoon weather creates perfect conditions for ear infections in young children. High moisture levels, frequent colds, and water exposure make little ears especially vulnerable during this season.
Ear infections often follow upper respiratory infections, which are common during monsoon. When your child has a cold, mucus can block the eustachian tubes connecting the nose to the ears, trapping bacteria and causing painful infections. Watch for signs like ear tugging, crying when lying down, fever, or fluid drainage from the ear.
Prevention is key: After bath time, gently dry your child's outer ears with a soft towel—never insert cotton buds inside the ear canal. If your child gets caught in rain, dry their hair and ears thoroughly. Keep them away from dusty, damp areas where mold thrives. Breastfeeding babies should be held at an angle, never flat, to prevent milk from entering the ear canal.
Avoid putting oil or home remedies in the ear without consulting your pediatrician. If your child shows signs of ear pain or infection, seek medical advice promptly. Most ear infections need proper diagnosis and sometimes antibiotics. With simple precautions and quick action, you can help your little one enjoy a comfortable, infection-free monsoon season.
