Protecting Little Ears This Monsoon

Why ear infections spike during monsoon and how to keep your child's ears safe

The humid monsoon weather creates the perfect environment for ear infections in young children. The combination of increased moisture, frequent colds, and water exposure makes little ears vulnerable.

Ear infections often start when your child catches a cold during monsoon. The infection can travel from the nose to the middle ear through the eustachian tube. Watch for signs like ear tugging, irritability, fever, difficulty sleeping, or fluid discharge from the ear. Babies may cry more during feeding as sucking creates pressure in infected ears.

To protect your child's ears: Always dry ears gently after baths with a soft towel—never insert cotton buds inside the ear canal. During head baths, tilt your child's head to let water drain naturally. If your child has a cold, keep them upright during feeds to prevent milk from entering the eustachian tube. Avoid swimming pools during monsoon as they carry higher infection risks.

Never ignore ear pain or discharge. Visit your pediatrician promptly as untreated ear infections can affect hearing development. Most infections resolve well with proper treatment. Meanwhile, you can provide comfort with a warm (not hot) compress held gently against the outer ear. Keep your child's immunity strong with nutritious foods like dal, seasonal fruits, and adequate fluids to help prevent infections.
