Protecting Little Ears This Monsoon
Ear infections spike during monsoon—here's how to keep your child comfortable
The humid monsoon weather creates the perfect environment for ear infections in young children. When moisture gets trapped in the ear canal, bacteria and fungi thrive, leading to painful infections that can make your little one cranky and uncomfortable.
Watch for these warning signs: your child tugging at their ears, crying more than usual, trouble sleeping, fluid drainage from the ear, or fever. Babies may also refuse to feed as sucking can increase ear pressure and pain.
Prevention is key! After bath time, gently dry your child's outer ears with a soft towel—never insert cotton buds inside the ear canal. Keep bath water out by placing a cotton ball coated with petroleum jelly at the ear opening during hair wash. Avoid swimming in pools during heavy monsoon unless properly supervised. Breastfeed infants in an upright position to prevent milk from entering the ear canal.
If your child develops an ear infection, don't ignore it. Visit your pediatrician promptly—ear infections need proper medical evaluation. Never put home remedies like oil or breast milk into an infected ear without medical advice. With proper care and quick action, your child will be back to their cheerful self soon!
