Protecting Baby's Skin from Fungal Infections
Damp monsoon weather increases fungal skin infections in babies—here's how to prevent them
The humid monsoon weather creates the perfect environment for fungal infections in young children. Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable because their skin folds (neck, armpits, thighs, and diaper area) trap moisture, creating breeding grounds for fungi.
Common signs include red, itchy patches, white scaling, or small bumps in skin folds. Some babies develop oral thrush (white patches in the mouth) or ringworm (circular red patches). If your child is constantly scratching or seems uncomfortable, check these areas carefully.
Prevention is key: Always pat your baby completely dry after baths, paying special attention to skin folds. Change wet clothes immediately after they come in from rain or play. Use breathable cotton clothing and avoid tight-fitting synthetic fabrics. Keep the diaper area extra dry—frequent diaper changes and some diaper-free time daily work wonders. For older toddlers, ensure their feet are thoroughly dried, especially between toes.
Avoid applying too much cream or oil in humid weather, as this can trap moisture. If you notice any persistent rash or unusual patches, consult your pediatrician promptly. Fungal infections are easily treatable when caught early but can spread quickly if ignored. A little extra attention to keeping your little one dry and comfortable goes a long way during these damp months!
