Protect Your Little One's Eyes This Summer

Strong summer sun can harm young eyes more than you think.

As temperatures soar across India this May, most parents worry about sunburns and dehydration — but little eyes need protection too! Children under 5 have larger pupils and clearer lenses than adults, which means more harmful UV rays reach their sensitive retinas. Don't take this lightly.

When stepping outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM, try to keep your baby or toddler in the shade as much as possible. Use a wide-brimmed hat or a stroller canopy to block direct sunlight. If your child is above 3 years, child-safe UV-protective sunglasses with wrap-around frames are a wonderful investment — look for ones that block 99–100% UVA and UVB rays.

Indoors, watch out for dust and dry air from fans and coolers, which are very common in Indian homes during summer. These can cause red, itchy, or watery eyes. Wipe your child's face and eyes gently with a clean, damp cotton cloth 2–3 times a day. If you notice persistent redness, discharge, or your child rubbing their eyes frequently, consult your pediatrician — it could be conjunctivitis, which spreads quickly in summer.

Never use adult eye drops on children without a doctor's advice. Keep swimming pool visits supervised, and always rinse eyes with clean water after a swim. Small habits today protect your child's precious vision for life.
