Protect Your Little One from Summer Tummy Bugs
Essential tips to prevent food poisoning in young children during hot summer months
Summer heat creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, making food poisoning especially common in children under 5. Their developing immune systems make them more vulnerable to infections from contaminated food.
Start with proper hand hygiene - wash your hands and your child's hands with soap before every meal and snack. Avoid street food, cut fruits from vendors, and anything that's been sitting out for more than 2 hours. Be extra cautious with dairy products like paneer, curd, and milk - they spoil quickly in summer heat.
When preparing meals at home, cook chicken, eggs, and fish thoroughly. Store leftovers immediately in the refrigerator, and reheat them until steaming hot before serving. Avoid giving raw or undercooked foods to young children. Wash all fruits and vegetables under running water, even those you'll peel.
Watch for warning signs of food poisoning: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, or unusual fussiness. If your child shows these symptoms, offer ORS frequently and consult your pediatrician immediately. Dehydration happens quickly in little ones, so never delay seeking medical help.
Remember, prevention is always easier than treatment. A few simple precautions can keep your child healthy and happy all summer long.
