Protect Your Child's Tummy This Summer!
Heat makes tiny tummies vulnerable — here's how to keep them safe.
May heat in India is brutal — and your little one's digestive system feels it the most. Diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and food poisoning spike every summer, especially in children under 5. But with a few simple habits, you can keep your child's tummy happy and healthy.
First, food safety is everything. Never leave cooked food out for more than 1–2 hours in summer heat. Avoid giving your child cut fruits from outside vendors, roadside juices, or uncovered food. At home, always wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Dal-rice, khichdi, and curd-rice are your best friends — they are light, nutritious, and easy on the stomach.
Breastfed babies have natural protection — if you are nursing, continue! For older children, offer small, frequent meals instead of large ones. Avoid heavy, oily, or spicy foods during peak summer. Buttermilk (chaas), homemade lassi, and fresh coconut water are wonderful options that also keep hydration up.
Watch for warning signs: more than 3 loose stools in a day, blood in stool, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration (dry mouth, sunken eyes, no tears when crying). These need immediate medical attention — do not delay.
Keep ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) sachets at home always. At the first sign of diarrhea, start ORS immediately. A healthy tummy means a happy, energetic child — and a less stressed parent!
