Protect Your Child's Eyes This Summer

Strong sun and dust can harm little eyes — here's how to keep them safe.

Summer in India brings blazing sun, dry winds, and dusty air — all of which can be surprisingly harsh on your little one's delicate eyes. Children's eyes are more sensitive to UV rays than adult eyes, and prolonged exposure can cause redness, irritation, or even long-term damage over time.

When stepping outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM, try to keep your child in the shade as much as possible. For toddlers aged 2 and above, a well-fitting hat with a wide brim does wonders. You can also find child-safe UV-protective sunglasses (look for UV400 label) — make it fun by letting them pick their favourite colour!

Dust and pollution are equally troublesome. If your child's eyes look red, watery, or they keep rubbing them, rinse gently with clean, cool water. Avoid touching or rubbing, as this can worsen irritation or introduce infection. Never use adult eye drops without a doctor's advice.

Indoors, keep fans from blowing air directly onto the child's face, as dry airflow can cause irritation and dryness. If your baby is under 1 year and you notice excessive tearing, sticky discharge, or persistent redness, consult your paediatrician — it could be a blocked tear duct or early conjunctivitis.

A healthy diet rich in vitamin A — think carrots, ripe mangoes, and dal — also supports good eye health from within. Small habits today protect bright eyes for a lifetime!
