Protect Your Baby's Eyes This Summer!

Harsh Indian summer sun can harm little eyes — here's how to keep them safe.

As temperatures soar across India in May, we protect our children with sunscreen and cotton clothes — but we often forget their delicate eyes! Young children's eyes are far more sensitive to UV rays than adult eyes, and prolonged exposure to harsh summer sunlight can cause irritation, redness, and long-term damage.

When stepping outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM, try to keep your baby in the shade as much as possible. Use a wide-brimmed hat or a stroller canopy to block direct sunlight. For toddlers (3 years and above), child-safe UV-protective sunglasses are a great investment — look for ones that block 99–100% UV rays and fit snugly without being tight.

Indoor eye care matters too! Avoid seating your child directly in front of fans or coolers — the dry, dusty air can cause watery eyes, itching, and conjunctivitis (pink eye), which spreads very quickly in summer. If your child rubs their eyes frequently, rinse gently with clean, cool water. Never use rosewater or homemade drops without a doctor's advice.

Watch for these warning signs: excessive tearing, redness, yellow discharge, or your child avoiding bright light. These could signal an eye infection that needs prompt medical attention. Summer is peak season for conjunctivitis in India — wash hands often and never share towels or pillowcases.

A little care and shade goes a long way in keeping those bright, beautiful eyes healthy all summer long! 🌞
