Preventing Diaper Rash & Fungal Infections
Monsoon humidity increases fungal infections in babies - here's how to protect
The monsoon's high humidity creates the perfect environment for fungal infections in babies, especially in skin folds, diaper areas, and the scalp. Many parents notice persistent diaper rash, white patches in the mouth (oral thrush), or redness in neck and thigh creases during this season.
Key prevention tips: Change diapers frequently - every 2-3 hours, even if not soiled. After bathing, pat dry completely, especially in skin folds behind ears, neck, underarms, and groin. Use a soft cotton cloth to gently dry these areas. Let your baby go diaper-free for 15-20 minutes twice daily to allow the skin to breathe. Avoid heavy creams that trap moisture; instead use light antifungal powders like candid powder in consultation with your pediatrician.
For oral thrush, sterilize bottles, pacifiers and toys regularly by boiling them. If breastfeeding, keep your nipples clean and dry. Choose loose, breathable cotton clothing over synthetic fabrics. The elastic bands of cloth diapers should not be too tight.
Warning signs to see a doctor: Persistent rash lasting more than 3 days, pus-filled bumps, bright red patches with raised borders, white coating in mouth that doesn't wipe off easily, or if your baby seems uncomfortable and fussy. Remember, prompt treatment prevents fungal infections from spreading and causing discomfort to your little one.
