Preventing Colds & Coughs This Monsoon
Simple ways to protect your little one from respiratory infections during rainy season
The monsoon brings a spike in respiratory infections among young children. The combination of humidity, temperature fluctuations, and increased indoor time creates perfect conditions for viruses to spread.
Start with the basics: ensure your child's hands are washed frequently, especially after outdoor play. Keep them away from crowded places during peak monsoon when infections spread rapidly. Dress them in layers so you can adjust as temperatures change throughout the day—a sudden chill after rain can lower immunity.
Boost their natural defenses with warm, nourishing foods. A morning cup of turmeric milk (haldi doodh), ginger-infused dal, or kadha made with tulsi and honey (for children over 1 year) can work wonders. Include vitamin C-rich foods like amla, oranges, and tomatoes in their meals.
Keep indoor air quality good by ensuring proper ventilation even during rains—open windows for short periods when it's not pouring. Avoid using room fresheners or agarbattis that can irritate little airways. If your child develops a runny nose, steam inhalation with plain water (under supervision) and nasal saline drops can provide relief. Most importantly, don't rush to antibiotics for every cold—viral infections need rest, fluids, and time to heal naturally.
