Pool Safety Rules Every Parent Must Know
Essential water safety tips to keep your little ones safe this summer
With summer temperatures soaring, many families are heading to pools and water parks for relief. While water activities are wonderful for children, drowning remains a leading cause of injury-related death in young children. As your pediatric advisor, I want to share crucial safety measures that can save lives.
Never leave your child unattended near water, even for a few seconds. Drowning happens silently and quickly - often within 2-3 minutes. Always designate a 'water watcher' who stays focused solely on supervising children, without distractions like phones or conversations.
For toddlers and non-swimmers, use proper life jackets (not arm floaties) that are Coast Guard approved. Even if your child knows swimming, maintain arm's length supervision in pools. Ensure pool areas have proper barriers, locks on gates, and pool covers when not in use.
Teach your children basic water safety rules: no running near pools, no pushing others, and always ask permission before entering water. Consider enrolling children above 4 years in swimming lessons, but remember - swimming skills don't make them drown-proof.
Trust your instincts. If something feels unsafe, remove your child from the situation immediately. Your vigilance is their best protection.
