Managing Separation Anxiety in Toddlers

Help your little one feel secure when you're apart with these gentle strategies

It's Friday evening and you're trying to step out for just 30 minutes, but your toddler is clinging to you with tears streaming down. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Separation anxiety peaks between 18-24 months and is actually a sign of healthy attachment.

**Why it happens:** Your child is developing object permanence but hasn't yet learned that you always come back. This is completely normal developmental behavior, not a sign of poor parenting.

**Practical tips that work:** Create a special goodbye ritual - maybe a secret handshake or three kisses. Never sneak away, as this breaks trust. Instead, keep goodbyes short and cheerful. Leave a small item of yours (like a dupatta or handkerchief) with them as a 'connection object'. Practice short separations during calm times - leave them with dadi or nani for 10 minutes while you're in another room.

**What to avoid:** Don't prolong goodbyes or show your own anxiety. Avoid dismissing their feelings with "big boys/girls don't cry." Never use separation as punishment ("If you don't listen, I'll leave you").

**When to seek help:** If anxiety intensifies after age 3, disrupts daily life, or comes with physical symptoms like frequent tummy aches, consult your pediatrician. Remember, with patience and consistency, this phase will pass!
