Keeping Your Little One Safe from Tummy Bugs
Essential food safety tips to prevent infections during monsoon season
Monsoon brings relief from heat, but also increases the risk of food-borne infections in young children. Their developing immune systems make them especially vulnerable to contaminated food and water.
Start with water safety: Always boil drinking water for at least 10 minutes and cool it before giving to your child. For babies under 6 months on exclusive breastfeeding, continue as usual - breast milk provides natural protection. Avoid street food, cut fruits from outside, and raw salads during monsoon. Stick to freshly cooked, warm meals at home.
Practice strict kitchen hygiene: Wash all vegetables and fruits in running water, then soak in warm water with a pinch of turmeric for 5 minutes. Store food in airtight containers and refrigerate promptly. Discard any leftover food after 2-3 hours at room temperature. Clean your child's feeding bottles, sippy cups, and utensils with boiling water daily.
Watch for warning signs of food poisoning: frequent loose motions, vomiting, fever, or refusal to eat. Keep your child well-hydrated with ORS, coconut water, or dal ka pani. If symptoms persist beyond 24 hours or your child appears lethargic, consult your pediatrician immediately. Prevention is always easier than treatment during the rainy season!
