Keeping Mosquitoes Away from Your Little One
Safe and effective ways to protect babies and toddlers from monsoon mosquitoes
Monsoon brings relief from heat, but also a surge in mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria. Protecting your little one requires extra care, as harsh chemical repellents aren't suitable for babies under 2 months.
For infants, physical barriers work best. Use mosquito nets over cribs and prams—ensure there are no tears or gaps. Dress your baby in full-sleeved cotton clothes in light colors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Keep windows closed or install mesh screens.
For babies above 2 months, pediatrician-approved mosquito repellents with DEET (up to 30%) or natural options like citronella can be used sparingly on exposed skin—avoid hands and face as babies tend to put them in their mouths. Always do a patch test first. Electric mosquito rackets and liquid vaporizers should be used in well-ventilated rooms, never directly near the baby's sleeping area.
Prevent water stagnation around your home—check plant pots, coolers, and drains weekly. Even a bottle cap of water can breed mosquitoes! If your child develops fever during monsoon, consult your pediatrician immediately rather than waiting, as early detection of dengue or malaria is crucial.
Remember, prevention is always better than treatment, especially for our vulnerable little ones.
