Keeping Mosquitoes Away from Your Little One
Safe and effective ways to protect babies and toddlers from mosquito bites
Monsoon brings relief from heat but also invites unwanted guests - mosquitoes! For young children, mosquito bites aren't just itchy; they can transmit dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.
For babies under 2 months, avoid chemical repellents completely. Use mosquito nets with fine mesh over cribs and prams. Dress them in full-sleeved, loose cotton clothes in light colors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. For older babies and toddlers, you can use pediatrician-approved natural repellents containing citronella or neem. Apply only on clothes, not directly on skin for children under 6 months.
Inside your home, empty all water containers, flower pots, and coolers weekly - even small puddles can become breeding grounds. Use mosquito nets while sleeping and avoid strong chemical coils in rooms where children sleep. Window screens are your best friend during monsoon.
If your child gets bitten, resist the urge to apply strong balms. A simple cold compress and calamine lotion work well. Watch for signs of fever, rashes, or unusual lethargy after bites, and consult your pediatrician immediately if you notice anything concerning. Prevention is always better than cure, especially during monsoon months!
