Keeping Mosquitoes Away from Your Little One
Safe and effective ways to protect babies and toddlers from mosquito bites
Monsoon brings a surge in mosquito breeding, putting our little ones at risk of dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Babies and toddlers need special protection as their immunity is still developing.
For children under 2 months, avoid chemical repellents completely. Use mosquito nets with fine mesh over cribs and strollers. Dress your baby in full-sleeved, light-colored cotton clothes during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. For older babies (above 2 months), use pediatrician-approved natural repellents containing lemongrass or citronella, but never apply on hands or near the mouth.
Around your home, eliminate stagnant water in coolers, plant pots, and drains weekly. Use mosquito screens on windows and doors. Electric vapourizers with baby-safe liquids can be used in well-ventilated rooms, but switch them off 30 minutes before your child enters. Avoid coils and strong chemical sprays in children's rooms.
Watch for warning signs: high fever lasting more than 2 days, rash, persistent vomiting, or unusual sleepiness. These need immediate medical attention. Prevention is always better than cure, especially during monsoon months when mosquito-borne illnesses peak across India.
