Keeping Little Ones Safe from Mosquitoes

Essential mosquito protection tips for babies and toddlers this monsoon season

The monsoon brings relief from heat, but also increases mosquito breeding—putting our little ones at risk for dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Babies and toddlers need extra protection as their immune systems are still developing.

For babies under 2 months, avoid chemical repellents entirely. Use mosquito nets with fine mesh over cradles and prams, and dress them in full-sleeved cotton clothes. For older babies, choose pediatrician-approved natural repellents containing citronella or neem. Apply only on clothes, not directly on skin.

Eliminate breeding spots around your home—empty water from plant trays, coolers, and buckets daily. Even a bottle cap of stagnant water can breed mosquitoes! Use mesh screens on windows and run fans to keep mosquitoes away naturally.

Timing matters: mosquitoes that spread dengue are most active during early morning and evening. Keep children indoors during these hours when possible. If your child develops sudden high fever, rash, or unusual irritability after a mosquito bite, consult your pediatrician immediately. Remember, prevention is always easier than treatment, especially with our vulnerable little ones.
